How to Fight Poverty in Your Community

Are you looking to do your part to fight poverty?

There are many ways you can help those experiencing difficult times in your area.

In this article, we talk more about what poverty looks like here in the U.S. and what you can do to fight poverty in your own community.

What it Means to Live in Poverty

Living in poverty means that an individual or family lacks the resources to consistently meet basic needs and participate in society. These basic needs are typically considered to include a sufficient supply of food, clean water, and clothing, as well as shelter.

Poverty in the United States

The United States Census Bureau determines our country’s poverty levels by using a set of income thresholds. These change depending on household size and composition. If a family’s income is less than their threshold, they are considered to be living below the poverty line.

As of 2024, an estimated 10.6% of Americans – 35.9 million people – live below the poverty line in the U.S.

Food Insecurity in the United States

In addition to those living in poverty are people who are considered to be food insecure

“Food insecurity” occurs when individuals and families aren’t able to consistently and easily access enough nutritious and safe food for an active and healthy life. While they may not be below the poverty line, they are often making sacrifices and tough decisions, such as whether to pay the bills or put food on the table.

13.7% of American households were determined to be food insecure in 2024.

What Does Poverty & Food Insecurity Look Like?

The thing is, poverty and food insecurity can impact anyone, anywhere. People living in poverty or experiencing food insecurity come from all walks of life – all cultures, genders, ages, and backgrounds.

Many are underemployed. They may have a job (or several), but rising costs are making it harder and harder to make ends meet. Others may be facing unexpected challenges, such as a sudden job loss or illness, or are unable to work due to barriers such as language or disability.

Still more individuals and families may be ok for now…but they could be just one emergency away from a difficult situation.

Everyone experiencing poverty or food insecurity is going through a tough time, but a helping hand could make all the difference. That’s where you come in!

4 Ways to Fight Poverty & Food Insecurity in Your Area

To help fight poverty and food insecurity in our country, individuals like you are needed to make a difference.

Start by giving back where you live, and you’ll be helping your neighbors build stability and break cycles while making your community stronger.

Here are four ways you can do just that!

1. Donate Funds to Fight Poverty

If you are able, one of the best ways to fight poverty in your area is to make financial contributions to local nonprofits.

When you give to community food banks, food pantries, thrift stores, shelters, and other organizations, you make it possible for them to steward your funds in ways that will truly benefit those experiencing poverty in your area.

Better yet? Become a monthly donor for a few of these nonprofit organizations! As a monthly donor, your ongoing support provides regular income that helps these nonprofits plan ahead, respond quickly in emergencies, and continue serving others, no matter what.

2. Donate Food & Personal Items to Help Your Neighbors

Another way to help fight poverty is to donate food, clothing, household goods, and personal care products to nonprofits that distribute these items in your community.

Our advice? Ask first! Check in with your local nonprofits to see what items they need the most at any given time.

For example, some may have an abundance of boxed mac and cheese, but are low on fruits and vegetables. Others may have a large stack of winter coats, but no hats or gloves.

Making sure to donate requested items ensures that the needs in your community are filled.

3. Volunteer Your Time & Talents

Several of your local nonprofits doing their part to fight poverty could be in need of volunteers. After all, it takes a lot of time and effort to keep pantry shelves stocked, sort through donations, or even walk alongside neighbors in need in various ways.

Many nonprofits are also looking for members of the community to serve on their board or even help out in the office. So, if you’re skilled with finances, project management, or even marketing, there could be a place for you!

Call or email a few nonprofits whose missions align with what you’re looking to do. Let them know you’re interested in volunteering and share your skills as well as the amount of time you’re able to commit. Several organizations may already have online forms available for potential volunteers.

4. Become an Advocate

One more way you can fight poverty? Use your voice!

Become an advocate for those living below the poverty line. Talk about the importance of helping your neighbors with your friends and family. Share important articles or fundraisers from your favorite nonprofits on social media. Or, offer to speak or volunteer at a booth at community events.

Also, make sure to pay attention to local elections. Use your vote to help bring laws into place that protect and serve these vulnerable populations.

How Grace Care Center Tackles Poverty

Grace Care Center is a Central Indiana nonprofit focused on serving those facing poverty and food insecurity. We walk alongside our neighbors experiencing difficult times, offering a range of tools and resources that empower them to build stability and make lifelong changes.

Most families start their journey in our Choice Food Pantry. Here, Care Center Friends are invited to shop in a grocery-store-style setting, using points to select groceries and household items that work for their family.

Other services include free English classes, Vehicle Services, and a zero-interest Micro Savings and Loans program. We also offer Cooperative Services – the Co-op – where volunteer coaches provide guidance in managing finances, building a budget, paying down credit, and more.

But it takes a lot of people like you to keep Grace Care Center running smoothly!

How You Can Fight Poverty with Grace Care Center

Each week, hundreds of volunteers take on roles throughout the Care Center. They greet Friends in our Welcome Center, shop with them in the Choice Food Pantry, sort and stock donations in our warehouse, teach English classes, serve as financial coaches, and so much more. You can sign up to volunteer at the Grace Care Center here.

We’re also always accepting food donations at bins around the Care Center. Follow Grace Care Center on Facebook to stay up-to-date on our most-needed items! And, while you’re at it, become an advocate by sharing a post or two from Grace Care Center and the Grace Care Center Foundation.

The Foundation resources the Care Center by connecting community partners and generous individual donors with our mission. Through partnerships, financial gifts, monthly donations, and more, we’re able to provide Central Indiana families with ongoing access to food and resources during their most difficult times.

You can make a donation to the Grace Care Center Foundation here.
