Making Dreams Possible for Luz + Anthony

Care Center Friends Luz and Anthony have always had big dreams. They hoped to own their own home, go back to school, and create a secure and fulfilling life for their three children.

But dreams like these require financial stability. And although Luz and Anthony were working hard every day to achieve their goals, their debt made it all seem out of reach.

This all changed when the couple first walked through the doors of the Grace Care Center. Here, they found more than food…they found stability, community, and hope.

Luz and Anthony’s Care Center Journey

Luz and Anthony started their journey with the Care Center in the Choice Food Pantry.

Each week, they visited the Pantry to access healthy food options and household goods for their family. They were able to make selections that worked for their lifestyle, including some of their kids’ favorite snacks as well as fresh fruits and vegetables, a variety of dairy and meat products, and more.

These groceries helped stretch Luz and Anthony’s budget and alleviated some financial strain. But, even as both parents worked diligently to build their credit, they were still finding it difficult to reduce their debt on their own.

By joining the Care Center’s Cooperative Services (the “Co-op”), they didn’t have to go it alone anymore!

Every month, Co-op volunteers worked alongside Luz and Anthony to build and follow a budgeting plan. By creating a debt “snowball,” they were able to knock out three big debts over time – an accomplishment achieved through resilience, determination, and hope.

“We had helped them get their credit to a place where they were able to qualify for a first-time home mortgage,” says Care Center Volunteer Jed.

Achieving their dreams didn’t stop there. Luz and Anthony were also connected to Care Center Volunteer Janice, a family lawyer. Janice helped Anthony officially adopt their oldest child, further strengthening their blended family.

Today, Luz and Anthony and their three children are living in their first home. Anthony recently got a new job. And Luz – inspired by working with the Care Center and Janice – is attending law school so that she can one day help other families.

When Luz and Anthony first visited the Care Center, they were looking for food. Over time, they found something much more powerful: hope.

How You Can Help More Families

Through our community of support filled with people like you, families like Luz and Anthony’s are empowered with tools, resources, and relationships that help them work towards lasting change. Every person who walks through our doors is treated with dignity as we strive to end poverty in Central Indiana, one life at a time.

While food is often just the first step here at the Care Center, it’s an important one. When you give today, you help us keep the shelves stocked in the Choice Food Pantry so that more families can access the groceries they need to stretch their budgets and build stability. Thank you!
