More Than an Oil Change: My First Car Care Saturday
By Ashley Read, Assistant Director of Development
Held every other month in partnership with Christian Brothers Automotive, Car Care Saturdays provide families participating in Grace Care Center’s Co-op with free oil changes, multipoint safety inspections, and other essential vehicle services.
And this past Saturday, I had the pleasure of volunteering at my first Car Care Saturday!
This particular Saturday was especially exciting. Typically, 20–30 vehicles are serviced during a Car Care Saturday. But in honor of Christian Brothers Automotive’s Day of Service, employees and volunteers came together to service more than 60 cars!
Even more special, the extra support meant additional spots were available, allowing even more Care Center Friends to participate.
An Inside Look at Car Care Saturday
The day started bright and early at 7:30 a.m., and we got right to work. I brought my dad along to volunteer with me. He has always been my sounding board for car maintenance, so with my limited knowledge of cars, I was grateful to have him by my side.
We were paired with an experienced volunteer who showed us the ropes. We learned how to refill windshield wiper fluid, check and inflate tires, raise vehicles on lifts, and change oil filters.
Before long, my team had affectionately given me the title of “Project Manager” as I helped document vehicle issues that needed additional attention from the professionals at Christian Brothers Automotive.
One of my favorite moments came when I learned that one of the volunteers working alongside us had previously participated in the Co-op program himself.
It was especially meaningful to see how the Care Center community comes full circle. Many who have received support often volunteer, help others, and contribute to share kindness and support they've experienced themselves. We also had the opportunity to service a vehicle that had been purchased through the Microsavings & Loans program!
The Importance of Accessing Vehicle Services
Reliable transportation is essential for getting to work, taking children to school, and managing the everyday responsibilities of life.
When a vehicle breaks down, the cost of repairs can create an unexpected financial burden, making it even harder for families to stay on their feet. Through programs like Car Care Saturdays and the Microsavings & Loans program, Grace Care Center helps address some of those barriers, giving families more opportunities to maintain reliable transportation and move toward greater stability.
I'm grateful to Christian Brothers Automotive, the volunteers, and everyone who helped make this special day possible. My first Car Care Saturday was a great reminder that caring for our neighbors can take many forms, and sometimes, it starts under the hood of a car!
